TALKS Jan and Alyssa have been invited to be a part of the prestigious Willowbank Lecture series in April!

RESEARCH Alyssa's completion of the Action Canada Fellowship has culminated in the publication of the public policy report 'A Question of Future Prosperity: Developing a Heritage Fund in the Northwest Territories'. The report authors are: Jesika Briones, Andre Dias, Sarah Daitch, Julia Fan Li, Martin Lajoie, Alyssa Schwann.

The report has been covered in the press on the CBC, Northern Journal, Up Here Magazine, and CKLB Radio NWT.

Update: Our policy recommendations in this report were used to press NWT's Finance Minister on the Heritage Fund.
The issue of the Heritage Fund has been a hot topic in the NWT Legislative Assembly the past couple of days with the members pushing the finance minister to strengthen his commitment and the rules around this fund. On Monday, MLA Wendy Bisaro tabled the Action Canada Fellow's policy paper in the NWT Legislative Assembly. On Tuesday, Feb 11 she directly referenced it in her member's statement and used the report recommendations during question period to press the minister to commit more than 5% of revenues (he committed now to 25%) to the fund, and that legislation will be introduced to administer the fund. These are two recommendations from the Fellow's report.

Reading the minister's responses he makes several points that are also from the Fellow's report around paying off high-interest debt before putting the money into a fund, so it appears he also read it and took some good advice from the report as well. We are elated that our report has helped inform the discussion in the Legislature.. now to just tackle governance issues.
